Student Government Association (SGA) of Roanoke College

The Student Government Association (SGA) represents the collective voice of the Roanoke College student body and serves as the official liaison between students and the College administration.

Rooted in the principles of honesty, respect, inclusion, and personal responsibility, the SGA strives to promote student leadership, advocacy, and engagement across all areas of campus life.

The SGA derives its authority from the Board of Trustees and operates under the guidance of the Office of Student Affairs, ensuring that all actions align with College policy and the institution’s mission.

The Association provides a structured platform for students to:

Express their perspectives on academic and campus issues.

Collaborate with administrators and faculty on policy development.

Propose, deliberate, and implement initiatives that enhance student life.

Organize events and programs that foster community, inclusion, and growth.

The structure of the SGA includes:

The Executive Branch, responsible for leadership, administration, and implementation of SGA goals.

The Legislative Branch (Senate), which debates and passes student legislation, approves club recognition, and allocates funding.

Standing and Ad Hoc Committees, which address specific student concerns and projects throughout the academic year.

All SGA meetings and decisions follow Robert’s Rules of Order Newly Revised, maintaining transparency, fairness, and democratic participation in all proceedings.

The SGA actively supports diversity, equity, and inclusion by ensuring equitable representation and encouraging involvement from all sectors of the student body.
